brakes and shifters
 

i currently have a set of shimano sora brake and shifters and i don't like how they are not like the traditional brake and shifters that most other bikes have. my set has a button that i push down on to shift up my gear and it's annoying. i want to switch to a set of shimano tiagra. but i need to know if a 9 speed shifter will work on a 8 speed bike. do you guys have any suggestions on a set of brake and shifter set that works for a 3 x 8? i don't want to spend more than 50 bucks to change em tho. thx for any help!

I don't think that's a realistic budget for this change. Your best bet would be to find a set of used RX100 levers but I suspect they may be hard to find and I can't get excited about used ones anyway. To use 9-speed levers you would also have to get a new cassette and chain and maybe a new front deailleur too. So that's going to cost significantly more for all those additional components.

Agreed, I just made the swap to 9spd on a road bike and the cost was around $200.
Hub, chain, shifter, cassette.

You specifically need shimano triple 8 speed STI shifters in rx-100, 105 or RSX. Your only option is to find a good used set,as they are out of print. Not real likely for $50. Otherwise, you upgrade to 9 speed with shifters, cassette,and chain.

Maybe get these for Shimano 600's and sell yours. Not $50, but probably under $100 net . . .

Dont have him throwing his money down a rathole. There was never a shimano 600 that shifted a triple front. I left them and DA out for a reason.

You will also need cassette to match the shifters because the cogs have closer spacing, see http://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html. I would advise you to upgrade to 105 shifters rather than Tiagra. The Sora is a simple mechanism well made, whereas the Tiagra is a complicated mechanism cheaply made - you need 105 if you want good functional quality. However if you want to keep your costs down I will buy your SORA shifters and cassette. PM me if you are interested.

Really?? Where do you get that?

Read the reports of users. All the complaints of the SORA shifters are about ease of use, not unreliability. The reports on the SORA rear der, are not good, but I am talking about the lever mechanism. There are many reports of unreliability of the Tiagra levers.

And where are all these 'reports'?

Doubt it.
If there was a problem Shimano would have pulled the product line.
They enjoy the dominance of the component world because of research and testing.
