stem adapter

https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Produc...oductId=175545

Really need to replace the 1" threaded stem in my 99 Klein quantum and since they are hard to find...

Anyone had experience with one of these?

We have put them on a number of peoples bikes and they work fine for road or commuting duty. I wouldn't trust them mountain biking though since they do feel more flexy than a regular stem.

Good to know. Is there a better/lighter one available anywhere else I should be looking?

Thanks!

i always recommend going to an LBS to get parts but I may be biased. There's not really anything better. It's not really a high performance part, more like just something to get your bike going until you can afford a new bike.

Before you get a new stem, make sure to measure the handlebar diameter in the center of the bars. You may find that even with the adapter, you're still going to struggle to find a stem that will work. You may be better off just finding a 1" stem.

BBB has 1, their #BHP 20, is a fluted quill, 22.2OD , to go inside the fork,
and Keyed (anti rotation) shims to go out to the 1" diameter.
Then Shims often supplied with the Stems, finish the adaptation.

It may Be lighter.

I got their #BHP21, the next larger size, [a threadless to threadless adapter, too].

distributor of NL based BBB is Bike Mine, in the US,
I bought thru R&E in Seattle, they had the account with Bike Mine in OKC, OK.

Me too but the local shops can't find a stem for less then $175.00 and I've lived with the one I have for 15 years. Works great with an Areo bar.

I'll check it out. Not really worried about weight, but want something strong that I don't have to worry about. My LBS would be installing it anyway. Not that I couldn't but they also look everything over when it's in there. Very cheap insurance!

There are still 1" [7/8" OD] stems, QBP has some that are angle adjustable, and open face.

How are 1" quill stems hard to find? They're all over eBay! Unless you want to buy new, and even then they're not impossible to get.

There are essentially three diameters used for handlebars. You have to make sure the new 1 1/8" stem you get has the correct clamp diameter.

Cheap "Huffy looking" stems abound. Looking for something nice has been tough. The two shops I frequent have both been able to find them but they are, as I stated, very close to $200.00. I learned my lesson on ebay many years ago so that's out.

fietsbob, I'll check into this and relay it to my lbs!!!

Now back to our original programing..... Yes, that Nashbar adapter works well. I have it on one of my bikes that still has a 1" threaded fork and headset and the adapter lets me use a "threadless" stem to match my 31.8 mm handlebars.

If it were a 22.2 >25.4 it would be stepped, so they just used the 25.4 > 25.4 picture, twice..

Nitto Technomic is a nice Quill stem , so Other than not being open face ,
a good shiny silver choice. no adaptor needed
