Chain Guard - Replacement for road big ring - does this exist?
Hello all,
Can I swap out my 52 big ring with some kind of chain guard? 130mm road double. I only need the 42 inner ring on my commuter! Thanks all Simon |
What advantage is there to replacing the chainring with another equally heavy disk? Either just ignore the big ring or, if you really want just a chainguard, file the teeth off the big ring.

Search for bash guard or bash ring. You might find what you're seeking. FSA, Surly, Salsa and Raceface (among others) all make "bash guards" that might accomplish the task.

Common part for Cyclocross single chainring set ups.. even available made out of Carbon Fiber ..
I have bought one in several types over the decades.. TA of France , on that side of the Pond. Cyclocross World.com, on this side.. CH, Schlumpf sells them in the smaller & large sizes too since his 2 speed cranks come with. I have a 54t , both nicely anodized , black . MTB Bash guards are much thicker , for supporting the whole bike and rider during log jump crossings, for example.. Campag made 4 diameters in 144bcd, long ago.. i built up a 52-36 double from their triple in the 80's, the largest along side the 52t. Of course worn older, chainrings can be further de toothed.. |
I've looked for bash guards before but they always seemed excessively expensive for a simple round disk.. More expensive than I could buy a chainring for. I'd probably just grind the teeth off an old ring.
