Shimano STX deraleur replacement model?
I need to replace the Shimano STX on my 21 speed 1997 rocky mountain whistler bike. I see they do nor make this model anymore.
Anyone know what a reasonable cost replacement would be? I believe it is a direct mount that screws in under the wheel drop out..

Shimano STX was a heavily advertised model from Shimano that was more cosmetic, than durable. Meaning that the parts looked good, but didn't last long when used.
I replaced the STX derailleurs on my 1994 Trek 930 back in 1996 with new Deore LX components, and they are still working fine. From my experience, 7 and 8 speed STX components wore-out very rapidly, whereas the Deore components lasted mush longer in daily use.
If you want new inexpensive replacement parts, Shimano has 7 and 8 speed parts available. If you want higher quality 7 and 8 speed parts, you probably need to look on eBay or Craigslist for NOS (new old stock), found in someone's basement or an old bike shop's inventory.
Some of the higher end modern mountain bike bikes are quite a bit lighter than the older models (if you want to take a little weight off). I haven't tried installing the newer stuff on my old Trek 930 yet, because as I wrote earlier, the 1996 replacements are still working fine.
