Just picked up this repair stand
 

its a Conquer 400-TQXL-07

never heard of them, but for 50 bucks looks pretty decent, read the reviews on Amazon and it seems solid...


anybody have any experience with em?

with 6 bikes to feed this looks a little light duty. figure out it's limits and work within them.
i'm lusting for a stand myself, but like many, <$.

I work on my bikes outdoors, and theres a telephone pole right next to my outdoor work bench, so I got Park Tools 'wall clamp' and lag bolted it to said telephone pole. I can WAIL on the bike and it doesn't wobble at all. handy when removing really stuck bottom brackets and such. the new style clamp is /really/ nice too. when I'm not using it, I pull the clamp and lock assembly out of it and stow them in my tool shed.

i'd like a repair stand. was leaning towards the Feedback Sports Pro Elite. i won't be making any final decisions for awhile but if anyone has any experience with these conquer stands, please weigh in. thanks!

right now im using a 2x4 screwed to the rafters in a u shape with some hooks screwed into the bottoms... im hoping this stand is be better then that...

i have one like the one posted.
mine is made by made by minoura and doesn't have the shelf.
it's a nice little stand that is easily portable.

i received the stand today, nice and sturdy, however the clamp is too big for older bikes, and doesn't fit the top tube... i adjusted it all the way down and it still won't clamp... also the main part coming up rotates in its fitting

i think with some minor mods i can make it work for my needs,
first im going to put a bolt through the base of the stand so the pipe going up doesn't rotate in its base, and secondly i wrapped both clamps up with some old rubber bar tape, and that tightened the grip on the clamp

i think this particular stand was returned or was a floor model, it had already been partially assembled and on one of the pipes there was some marks on it.
some of you would return the stand, but i think for 50 bucks this will be fine,

my stand should be here in a hour or 2 i went with the park 9.but i like how ya stand looks cant beat that price

I have a Nashbar stand, and it appears to use the identical tripod frame as the one you linked to above, but with a simpler, cheaper head. I wouldn't recommend it. The frame is unstable, and the quick release that holds the tripod open slips (the hardware on the one you linked is identical in every way, I'm certain it's sourced from the same manufacturer). If I had to do it all over again, I would have spent $50 more and gotten a better stand.

you already got it? use it or send it back.. you can always hang wet clothing on it.


if you get some sandbags to lay over the legs that should reduce any tipping over.

it fits my needs, and for the price im happy, of course i haven't really had a project yet to really use it, hopefully i will soon...

I hope the local phone company doesn't come along some day and remove it for you. :)

As to WAILING on the bike, I always remove and reinstall bottom brackets while the bike is still has both wheels installed and I have the wheels on the floor. I don't want to put that much load on either the repair stand or on the frame tube or seatpost.

And thats why it got good reviews, peeps obviously took the price into account. I'd get 2 months out of a stand like that.

well, this pole is on MY property, and ONLY serves the drop to my house. I don't leave the bike clamp or the lock thing in it, so all thats left on the pole is the black part.

good point re: torquing with wheels on ground, but my hybrid's frame is pretty sturdy, its not like this is a fragile racing bike.

Sounds like the original stand posted, and the secondary one i linked too, may not fit my needs. i wish someone with experience would evaluate these lower priced stands and offer an objective review but it may be a wasted effort. i seriously question any stand which needs sandbags to keep it steady and has a clamping system (one of the major points of a repair stand) that is inadequate. i've already gone the cheap route decades ago, and don't want to do it again. although gordotrek says he needs minor mods to make it work for him (those minor mods leading to no rotation of the upright and adequate clamping) i don't think any decent repair stand should require mods like that. and i don't want to chance receiving an already used item sold as new (labeled used or open-box would change things of course :)

btw, someone up there said top tube.... was my understanding that you should always clamp a bike by its SEAT tube, preferably just under the top tube joint. at least, thats where I always clamp mine...

Where is it nice enough weather to work on bikes outside **********

coastal central california, at least when its not actually raining (typically 2-3 days of intermittent rain every week or so in the winter, then dry all spring/summer/fall). we're in a real cold spell right now, this AM the low was 36F and the high never got above 50F. actually, that's in a very protected spot in my back porch, my front more exposed thermometer measured 31F at midnight (but doesn't record).

I have a place to work on my bikes in the winter too. I call it my kitchen. :)
