Cable tension on bar end shifter / front derailleur loosens when standing up.

Hey all,

I recently installed a suntour "ratcheting" friction bar end front shifter on my bike. The shifter is installed at the end of my drop bars and the cable runs through the entire curve of the bar underneath the tape, exiting by the stem where it runs to the downtube and then to the front derailleur via under the bottom bracket. Something I noticed on my first test ride is that when I have the shifter pulled to maximum tension in the cable (in the big chainring), and when I stand up on the bike, the cable tension loosens after pedaling out of the saddle for a few seconds. It doesn't loosen enough to shift into a smaller chainring, but enough to cause chain rub on the derailleur cage. I'm 100% positive I'm not accidentally kneeing the shifter, and I assume this is somehow cause by frame flex when I stand up and put extra force on the bike.

Any idea how to fix this issue? I assume I need more "friction" in the shifter. There is a screw on the side of the shifter that can be tightened or loosened to increase/decrease how hard it is to move the shift lever. I suspect that if I just tighten this to the point where it doesn't loosen when I stand but is still easy enough to shift, the problem will go away.

Any thoughts on what might cause this and the solution to the problem? Thanks!

Can't see , not there .. guess: ,Frame is flexing..? did you use die drawn slicked down cable?

.. ratchet pawl should hold maybe the screw needs tightening.

. why you went on the internet instead of use the screwdriver is a puzzle to me.

mine have been fine for decades.. probably before you were born..

The tension bolt on the shift lever is there for just the reason you noted, to keep the shift lever in position under vibration and cable stress. So snug it down some more.

Smooth, die drawn stainless steel cables in good lined housing will reduce friction in the system and make the lever easier to move when you want it to.
