Key Spoke (Trailing) to the Right of Valve?

1 Attachment(s)
I've built a couple wheels before, but to be honest, never thought (understood?) about the whole trailing/leading spoke thing. I understand it now (elementary degree anyway).

In building my latest wheel, I may have done it weird. I'm not sure it matters, but just in case it could effect the strength/durability of the wheel, I thought I'd ask you all.

Here's a pic:

I accidentally put the Key spoke (spoke #3, a trailing spoke) in the first spoke hole to the right of the valve hole. In looking at my other LBS wheels, it appears I should have put this 2 holes to the right (where spoke #4 is) and on the outside of the flange.

The wheel is not tensioned completely. Should I take apart & do again? or will it be okay as is?

There are two ways of looking at it: As far as functionality of the wheel, it really makes little difference providing the wheel is well-built, with even tension and "stands", so (1) only you and a wheel-building, OCD nerd will ever notice the slight irregularity, so you could leave it "as-is" and do the same as when I make a small error, I tell folk that the slight blemish is my way of avoiding the inevitable nemesis of The Gods in retribution for my hubris, or (2) you could re-build the whole wheel and get a reputation of being an OCD Nerd and risk the wrath of The Gods (but at least it will make airing-up the tyre slightly easier) - HTH -

It makes no difference mechanically where the valve hole is, between parallel, crossed or inbetween spokes. It does make an aesthetic difference.

There is a subtle reason to have the valve between the parallel spokes. If the valve is at a cross you can't remove a press-on pump like a Silca by the karate chop method without bumping the spokes. You also don't want the valve between the spokes going in the same direction because it crates the illusion that a straight valve is crooked.

Years ago when rims were pinned there were some builders who insisted that the joint had to be at the cross (it doesn't make a difference), which was OK with 36h, because then the gap was at the valve and everybody was happy for whatever reason. But when 32h got popular we had to decide what we cared about -- crossing at the joint or gapped at the valve. Hands down gapped at the valve trumped worrying about the joint.

Drive-Right head in spoke radiating CCW pulls in, overchifted chain insuring jammed chain
and deeply cut spokes.

What in the world does that mean?

It's code, man.

I've never oberchifted my shain...

Lacing a wheel is the easy part of a build. If it was me I'd pull it all apart and start over, might take 30 minutes if you have a good set of instructions to go by. I like the instructions found in Jobst Brandt's book The Bicycle Wheel.

I do too, or Sheldon Brown . Sheldon Brown is nice now that it's color coded .

I would not worry about the whole 'leading/trailing pattern. It makes no difference to how the wheel works.

From your pic I would say you have it laced perfectly IF you have spoke hole offsets in the rim on the correct sides - can't tell from the picture.

Thanks for feedback.

Had my son de-lace the wheel (he learned a bit about it). Then I did it up again, hopefully correctly this time.

I have Brandt's book (have read most of it, 'cept technical stuff) and used Sheldon's instructions. But he kind of lost me the first time through--why I messed it up.

Now I just have to stop at LBS to pick some valve extensions for the tubes as the rim is 50mm (no spoke hole offsets, either).

Oberchifting doesn't sound good. Probably best to avoid it.
