Seatpost binder hardware.
 

My 1998 Trek 930 has a slipping seat post issue. I am familiar with all of the fixes, carbon paste, rolling it in dirt etc. (have tried all these) but what I am less clear on is does the type of hardware make a difference?

I am using a quick release binder bolt that is almost too short, there are only a few threads in the nut but I do have a lot of pressure on the quick release. IOW, the nut is holding.

So my question is: Will a longer bolt hold better?

Another question: When purchasing a standard (non quick release) binder bolt, I see many of them are slotted. That won't work in my seatpost it appears. So what do I look for in terms of a bolt? The "ears" of the seat post collar are 23 mm across, how long of bolt do I need?

What you have is what we call a open QR , when new might work for awhile but with time they don't hold as well as the older close QR . something like this http://www.biketoolsetc.com/index.cg...em_id=KY-SPQSB will work better for you . My wife had the same problem as you , I change the QR to this one and the problem went away .

+1 on the "closed" quick release, that goes for wheel QRs as well.
