I don't think I've ever so much time and money on my hands that I would use them on a project from which I would learn little for the time and spend much for the result. So if you want to mess around go ahead. Looking at the pics I would take the drill option mentioned above, using good bits and cutting oil, unless someone you know has access to cutting tools that can just cut through the crank arm to the cotter.

To each their own. It's got nothing wrong with it except for the cotter pin. All the gears work, brakes work, shifts fine. Good frame, I want to do it because it was my father's and it had significance to me. I know its not a fancy bike but it's a bike, and II'll ride it many more times. Also, my friend and I got the crank out with a better drill than I had. Just need to repaint and get all rust off components, new cables and bar tape and it'll be brand new again

Yes, to each his own - I already acknowledged earlier that "sentiment is not measurable" and advised you further as to how to get the crank off. So you have every right to do what you want. But please be real - it will never be brand new again, as pitted chrome does not get restored, worn chains and freewheels do not turn back to new, and if you do anything but a professional powder coat or similar paint job it will not look as good and will chip and wear.

ok...well no, it will not look brand new, fresh out of factory...but I don't care. I think you are focusing on very moot points in my comments. Pointing out that it won't be perfect paint, or new chrome. Not a concern with me. I'm a "glass is half full" kinda guy and I get that you are not, so please, just let me have this. Thanks for the help I really do appreciate it and don't mean to come off rude, but I'm focusing on the positive instead of the negative.

Hi,

Judging by appearances somebody has used a hammer on
that cotter pin after presumably losing the retaining nut.

G -clamp ? Put a socket or some form of spacer over the
part of the pin that sticks out. A ball bearing that locks
into the typical centre detent could be best for the
other end. No detent ? Chop a bolt into a short stub.
Apply some penetrating oil (wd40 at a pinch), (whilst you
at it WD40 the G-clamp), put together and crank the clamp.

rgds, sreten.
