right! heres a few badly taken pictures of the fork. its on the balcony and on my own its hard to get a picture that reveals the condition, plus my knee is sore so i cant be bothered to lug it inside. for comedic effect, i have included a picture of the wheel as well.
without wanting to turn this into a safety/advocacy discussion, i got hit by a (very) elderly couple, who were initially defensive but very quickly realised they were wrong and apologised. they then drove me to the bank where I got them to give me $250 for what i suspected would be a new bike- mine cost me $200 about 8 months ago. i got the reg but am not planning to take legal action, i'm sore but not broken. incidentally, my grandma recently decided that she was too old to drive. from the accident and from witnessing this guys driving from the passenger seat of his car, i suggested to him he make the same choice soon, lest he knock somebody else over... http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=307025 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=307026http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=307027http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=307028 |
but yeah i dont think the fork is bent?
|
You can't tell from looking whether the fork is bent for sure, although it looks to me as if it is slightly bent back. It could be bent to one side slightly or one blade could be a bit further back than the other. I don't think it's worth salvaging unless someone has a fork jig to check it and correct any problems. Even then someone would have to come along that needs close to that size and wants a used, beat-up white fork.

Not only is your frame toast, but your wheel is a taco. At the very least, you will eat well tonight. If we find our your fork is fried, you are golden.

Further discussion of this point may need to be moved to Advocacy and Safety, but if you were in a bike lane on the roadway (as opposed to a bike path) and traveling with traffic you may have recourse against the driver, depending of course on laws in your area.
Recourse is only meaningful if there's something worthwhile to recoup. The OP wasn't hurt, so there's no personal injury claim. Depending on where he lives, the filing fee to bring a small claims action might be more than he'd get. The only thing I could see is trying to pry a few bucks out of the driver's insurer. And that would probably be more trouble than it was worth. |
Being lugged, the tubes could be replaced, but of course the fees a proper frame builder would charge,
exceeds the cost of a new Tig-welded in Asia frame. |
meh, not sure. all i can say is i got the whole thing for about $200-230.

How much do you figure that the frame was worth before the accident?

you take that frame, and cut off the top and downtubes just forward of the seat tube and bottom bracket, and weld it up to the top of another bike frame, and build a unique double decker.
|
or cut off the tubes at the back of the bend, and put a vertical tube brazed, in there,
to hold up the front end, with the rear end and drivetrain on a trainer stand.. your own home Spinning Workout .. |

http://meghanh4.edublogs.org/files/2...ast-rzgyaq.jpg tacos... http://www-tc.pbs.org/food/files/201...an-tacos-3.jpg any questions? |
For what its worth, its kind of a shame that you didn't take legal action like call the police. Quite often the car owner's insurance company will settle for a reasonable amount that will make you whole again. In other words you would have gotten enough money to buy a new equivalent bike to the one that was wrecked plus your medical fees which would have been at the minimum, being checked out at the hospital. You would have been made whole again with peace of mind that you don't have any hidden injuries.

Put some duct tape around the dents, put on a smaller wheel and it should be good to go ....... KIDDING
|
Yep, I know what you mean. But I don't think I could bare the ordeal of it all at the time, not sure I could right now either. I've yet to have a positive encounter with a police officer here...

FWIW, we were never given the details of the accident, but since it was a frontal collision (with respect to the bike) it seems that the OP hit the car as much as the car hit him. He asked for and got a fair on the spot cash settlement from the driver, and has enough to replace the bike. It seems there was no personal injury. So that should close the case.
Of course he could have held out and gotten a medical examination (if he felt one was indicated) and/or maybe some more money than what he did if he was willing to wait out a legal process. There's a good chance that he might have been able to sue for more, and eventually gotten double what he did collect, which after legal fees and expenses could leave him worse off. All in all, it seems he did OK, and it shouldn't be our place to inflame him to milk this for more that being made whole which he apparently was. Also, since the bike was a Norco, I'm guessing that he might be in Canada, where medical costs are treated differently and the legal process isn't the same as in the USA, and is not nearly as friendly to plaintiffs. To the OP, take the dough and buy a new bike, then strip salvageable hardware off this one for spares and move on with your life. |
