Bottom Bracket Removal

I have a bike that I'm working on that has I believe they are called splines on the bottom bracket. How do I know which one to buy. Or is there only one? From looking at park tools there appear to me more than one but which one should I buy.

Thanks...

You have to know both type and dimensions. If you are buying local just take in the bike. If online try Google with the brand, model and year of the bike and find a page that lists "specification" and "bottom bracket" or "crankset." With that info any online merchant should be able to tell you which will work. If that does not work then give us the same info - usually easier than explaining how to properly measure the bottom bracket length.

Thanks for the help. I'll take a picture if that will help. I don't see any name on it, just a serial Number. Probably has five coats of paint on it.

If by IT you mean the bike then take a picture of the crank, but you may want to take it to a shop to find out proper sizing and replacement parts.

Well I figured it out. I looked at the Park Tools catalog and found the tools for the BB and was able to determine that the tool I need is the BBT-22 or BBT-32. I looked at the crank and noticed that there were twenty grooves in it. So thanks to everyone again for your help. Another tool to add to my list. I guess while I'm at it I'll get a crank wrench as well.
