Cassette Wobble
I'm trying to put a cassette on a used rear wheel, and I cant get the thing to stop wobbling (left-right wiggle/play). Its a pretty crappy hub with no brand-name on it, but good enough, and the cassette is a relatively cheap shimano 7-sp one. The wobble is is no more than one mm, and putting one of those skinny spacers makes the thing too thick. Is there a compatibility issue (not spline-related) that I wasn't aware of? How can I get rid of this wiggle?

I had this problem once with a cheap 7 spd cassette on an older 7 speed hub. The whole cassette had quite a bit of play even when the retaining nut was tight. I put a small steel spacer from the worn cassette behind the large cog, and it fixed it. I suspect the problem is that shimano is cheaping out and using an 8 part for the smallest cog spacer combo, giving you an extra 0.1mm of slop that may or may not be taken up on some hubs.

Once upon a time....
Didn't they manufacture that wobble into the freewheel to help with shifting cogs? The wobble made the chain catch a split quicker.
I thought I heard that once, seriously.
