Bottom bracket/crank question

Alrighty, I'm a new bike mechanic and I got a pretty basic question.

I'm tearing down an old rockhopper. On the bottom bracket, there's a bolt on the left. I took it off. A threaded piece on the right. I unthreaded that. Now what? I 'm not really sure how to get the cranks off.

Do I need a ecial tool or can I bang it off? I didn't want to mess anything up with my hammer unless I had to.

Thanks in advance for any help.

How old? Do you know the model of the bottom bracket?

Would help it you can ID the BB type you have, from your description, it sounds like square taper, if so, mallet, hammer, deadblow, take you pick, and hit it, it will come off.

You can read more here http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-.../crank-service on crank service / removal. though, unless you have an external type, with the safety pin, there is normally only one bolt to remove on each side for Square taper, or ISIS/Octalink.

bike is late 80s/early 90s. Cranks suntour. Bracket unknown. It looks like the left crank would slide off, but like I said I don't wanna just start whacking it with a hammer.

You need a crank puller. The Park tool page linked to above will cover all the details.

Thanks gang!

That's a square taper crank and you need a crank puller for square taper. $10 to $15 and an easy job. Or...whack with a hammer and maybe get a new BB. Your choice.

Sometimes I find it hard to comprehend how certain questions make their way to the forum. I would think that if you know the term bottom bracket it would be an obvious next step to search for repair/disassemble/remove/overhaul bottom bracket.
