Reinstalling Crankset
 
I am just finishing rebuilding my first bike. Tore it down to the the bare frame and had a friend paint it for me . Now comes the task of putting it all back together. I took lots of pictures so I can't forsee any problems. Except I am not sure if the crankset just goes back on the way it come off or does it have to be aligned any special way. I do know that one side is pedal down and the other side would be pedal up. But that's about all I know. Other than to regrease everything that was greased before. Any help would be appreciated.

A bicycle is not a jigsaw puzzle that you can just put together in the right order. Assembly is done after inspecting for any parts that need to be replaced and then parts are adjusted or tightened properly with proper lubrication where required. There is plenty of guidance available, particularly from sheldonbrown.com and parktool.com/blog, so there's is no point in writing out paragraphs of explanation when the procedures have already been laid out in detail. Videos are available as well, but focus on the two sources I mentioned.

You're not finishing the rebuild, but rather just starting the hard part.

Well I got everything inspected and checked and replaced what I had to and like you said, now the hard part comes. But I am just taking my time and doing one step at a time.

Sounds good. Just Google what you need to do (might want to Google bicycle diagram 1st so that you use proper terms in your search) and focus on the results from sheldonbrown and parktool.

+1. A square taper bottom bracket and crank only go together at 90° increments so getting the crankarms aligned properly is pretty trivial and any set of opposing flats can be used.

Octalink and ISIS bottom brackets offer more chances for misalignment so you have to be sure the arms are installed 180° apart, not just close. Again, you can start with any spline arrangement on one side and use the appropriate ones on the other side.

A Shimano Hollowtech II crank has the drive side fixed to the spindle and the non-drive side arm is keyed to the splined spindle end and will only go on one way.

The only thing it says is, Sugino VF48 on the sprocket and it is a double one. Off an old 10 speed bike. I believe that you call the bottom bracket a cup and cone bottom bracket and it has a square taper spindle. Not sure if all these terms are right. I am still in the learning process.

Ok, installing the cranks is hard to screw up for reason HillRider notes. However cup and cone BBs are tricky because you need to adjust the adjustable side enough to eliminate play without impinging the free movement of the bearings.

Don't apologize - you've given us more info, using the correct terminology, than a lot of people who expect us to read their minds and interpret their personal language. To top it off you actually use real sentences!

Thanks guys for all the help, it sure will make things a lot easier when I start to reassemble the bike. I know this bike well make someone very happy when it is finished.
