Fat tyre wear / longevity

Hi,

I'm a fan of the fatter tyre on my bikes.

As an example 23mm tyres run at ~ 100psi can be replaced
by 28mm tyres run at ~ 70psi. Due to lower pressure you will
get more comfort, also a 42% bigger contact patch, so more
grip. But does the bigger tyre last longer ?

I suspect it must be so, but not sure how much ?

rgds, sreten.

a bigger tire typically has thicker tread than a skinny race slick.

Depends .. start slowly accelerate smoothly?, brake modulation progressive?

or accelerate hard, brake abruptly?

... guess which riding style extends tire wear-life .. :innocent:

Tread compound formulation and the thickness of the compound will determine wear durability. Tire size is not much of a factor.

as others are saying
unless you have tires that are identical in every way except width
then there is no way to predict the effect of chaing tires on wear

but if you did have tires that were identical except for width
then yes they would wear at different rates
but again not easy to quantify bacause the way a wide soft tire interacts with the ground is different from the way a hard narrow tire does

I would not think relative wear would be significant enough to worry about compared to factors such as the mentioned contact patch and comfort, plus flat resistance, needed frequency of reinflation, rolling resistance.

is THAT why my motorcycle tires wear out so fast.... whodathunkit?
