Bottom bracket loose?
Never had this prob before and may not be using proper terminology but here goes: My crank arms are loose when pulled perpindicular to the frame. The bolts are on very tight so its not that. I think the bottom bracket is the problem, it looks like a sealed unit so I assume all you can do is replace the whole thing. On the chainring side are a bunch of slots to fit what looks like a "shimano" tool I see on ebay- do I need this tool to do the job? So what do you think, should I go ahead and remove/replace this bottom bracket? The bike rides fine , just makes noises so if the BB is shot I suppose I could keep riding it as is, I do not see how any other parts would be damaged!?!

For is the BB shot, without seeing, hard to tell; would remove the crankarms, and see what is happening to the spindle with these removed, if still an issue, you can replace the BB. For how to's, check out the guides on the Park Tools site, they give details of the tools you need (most likely crank puller & BB tools), other brands are available. https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help
