weird gear sounds

Hey,

First off I have a 2013 Giant Roam 3 Hybrid bike and when I switch to around 6-8th gear my bike starts to make a weird chain scraping noise is that just because I need to get it toned? Because I just bought the bike like a week ago. The sales guy said I would need to take the bike back in a month to get it re-toned is this the cause of why I would need to be doing that? Or is it another underlining problem?

Thanks!

You don't have to wait a month, they tell you that to make sure you bring it back even if you are not aware of problems or the need to retune it. Take it back now, have them both check out the bike and explain to you how to use the gears, including avoiding "cross-chaining." A decent shop would have done that in the first place.

I'm not sure from the description, but I gather you're describing chain rub on the front derailleur cage when you move to the other end of the cassette.

As the chain comes form various angles, it moves slightly in or out where it passes the cage, so if coming from the outside of the cassette it'll pass near the outer plate, and from the inner, the inner. The cage is usually not wide enough to accept all angles without moving, so it's adjusted to be right on the gears you use, at the expense of those you wouldn't normally use, such as the inner cassette positions with the outer ring.

Some FD levers have a 2nd click to fine tune (trim) the position, but many don't.

So I think your bike is OK and working normally, but since you should stop by the dealer and discuss the issue with him if you have questions.
