KoolStop Salmon pads on ceramic rim
 

Hi there,

A few weeks ago I changed my pads on the rear from the stock Shimano pads to KoolStop salmon ones.
A bit later, I had a rim failure (completely unrelated to the pads, just to be clear).
I got a new one that has a ceramic braking track.
Is it ok to keep the salmon pads for this?
I know KoolStop is making the green pads specially for ceramic rims. Should I get those?

The cost would be minimal and there would be no waste since my front pads need change as well, so I could put the rear Salmon ones on front and the green ones on the rear.

But is it necessary? useful? how good are the green pads?
Are the salmon ones just fine but a bit too soft for ceramic which will cause a premature wear if I keep them?

Salmon will wear out in no time on the ceramic rims, you really should use the ceramic specific - particularly on a new rim. As ceramic rims age, they lose a little of their bite, and may be used with regular pads with decent function.

As dabac mentioned the Salmon will wear out fairly quickly but they do stop well. Also not so great on long descents as the ceramic can make them get a little soft. I've used the Koolstop Greens and also Shimano makes a ceramic specific pad and I would say both perform about the same. The pads last awhile but braking is not as good as with the Salmons. Swisstop green pads (not specific ceramic) worked very well for me, great stopping power and wear somewhere between the Koolstop Salmon and the ceramic specific pads. No great stopping + cheap solutions for ceramics I'm afraid.

That is what I thought anyway.
My green KoolStops are on the way, should be there by beginning of next week.
Keeping salmons in the meantime, then putting them in the front (where the rim is non-ceramic) and will mount green on the rear.
