Tire / Innertube sizes question
Newbie here.
Just bought a Fuji absolute 2.0 recently at craigslist. I went to a bike shop and asked them for a tune up and change the tires and tubes as well. I told them i want bigger tires compared to the stock size (700 x 28), they put 700x35 which is fine with me. A week after i got a flat tire, and after watching "how to fix your bike videos" at youtube and buying tools as well i decided to change the tire myself. When i took out the inner tube, i saw that the size is 700x25 /28c. I am not an expert here, but logically i believe that the size of the inner tube should be compatible to the size of the tire, right? My inner tube that i should be using should be 700x35. Thanks. |
The tubes the fitted (if they did, and they didn't just re-used your original ones) woudl work, but larger innertubes would have been more appropriate, especially as you asked them to fit new tires and tubes.
Would be querying this with the bike shop and asking why they didn't fit tube more suited to the tire size fitted. To give you an idea of what should have been fitted, check this chart out, http://www.schwalbetires.com/bike_tires/tubes |
I use smaller tubes than the tire size. Makes it easy and quick to install.

While 28 tubes are in theory undersized for 35 tires, in real life they work OK.

But once you fix the flat, the repaired spot won't stretch as well. So, as far as I understand, the undersized tubes are ok until you get a flat. At that point it's a good idea to put in the right size tube.

What caused the flat? i checked the tire and i don't see any sharp objects on it. i have a feeling they reused my old inner tube. anyway, i ordered 2 inner tubes that is for the 700x35 and will be replacing them myself. |
Pump up the old inner tube and determine the cause of the flat. If there is a hole on the top (the side that faces the tyre) then it could be caused by something poking through the tyre.
If it is a hole on the inside, then check your rim tape. A broken rim tape could cause the spokes to puncture the tube. If it is on the inside with 2 little holes like a snake-bite, then there is not enough air in the tube and when it compresses and contacts the rims on impact with a curb, it will cause the puncture. If there is a big tear, then it could be over inflation, causing the tube to dislodge the tyre bead. |
