I think I trashed my front tire today

In a hard turn, I popped a rock out, sounded like a small gun going off, didn't think much of it, but when I looked down, I could see something was wrong on the left side of the tire. They are Gator Skin tires, and in the hatch pattern on the side, there is a nick in the rubber, and a slight bulge now.

Guess I'll get a new set tomorrow. I've got almost 3K on these. I'm going to go from the 25mm tires on it now to the 28's. Shop said my Madone should take the 28mm okay.

Any drawback to going to the 28's? I have larger tires on my Specialized and like the ride better.

The ONLY drawbacks to wider tires is slightly more air drag and weight.

For many people, rolling resistance on pavement is actually less, so if they clear your frame and fork go for them.

Thanks FBinNY. I thought I'd hate the resistance of the wider 34mm tires on my Spec Crux, but I really like them.

Is 3k on a set of Gatorskins good or bad? I think if the rock incident hadn't happened today, I'd have gotten a lot more miles on them.

Flats and tire cuts are a lottery. I ride tubulars, and I've gone 4,000 miiles without a flat. OTOH, 5 of us once had 8 flats between us in less than a mile.

I really like the slightly wider tires. Ride is not as harsh, and I really can't tell any drop in my average MPH.

As long as your brakes have a QR to open them when installing your wheel.
