Shifter cable stuck in shift lever.

I bought a 74 Schwinn continental a while back at the flea market. I love the bike. I decided I would replace the cables and brake pads. So, I went to my lbs, got cables, housing and a few other frills. The old cables were pretty stiff and frayed. I had to cut the rear derailleur cable to get it off the bike. I try to push it through the shifter and it is good and stuck. I've tried wd40, pushing it through with pliers. I even tried hammering a small nail through from the cable opening, but all that did was mar the cable end and maybe make it even harder to remove. I'm frustrated and my poor bike is sitting in the garage not being ridden. Does anyone have any ideas?

wd40 is useless to get parts like this unstuck. I would try PB Blaster to remove any corrosion that has fused the cable end to the inside of the shifter.
