Seatpost for clyd

My current seat post is a the stock one that came with my bike, "Alloy Micro Adjust Bootless Suspension 27.2x350mm". While the seat stays at the correct height it has a side to side wobble in the suspension portion. Thinking of going to a non-suspension post. 1. I have a very limited budget MAX $25 2. Needs to hold a #300 rider mainly on the road but the occasion non paved/gravel road. I found this one on Amazon, but wondering some opinions? http://www.amazon.com/Kalloy-Alloy-B..._cd_al_qh_dp_i

Thanks,

Micah

Micah, Before I checked your link, that was to be my suggestion.

I agree that Kalloy posts are pretty decent. But at 300#s you're pushing the limit.

How strong a post actually is depends on how far out it is. The strength increases the lower the seat, so at your weight using it at it's full height is definitely pushing it. Also the lack of suspension means the full job of accelerating your mass upward on bumps will go to the post.

You can help yourself by being attuned to bumps and lifting yourself off the seat letting your knees act as shock absorbers, This lowers stress on all the components from the wheels up.

Then if you're still concerned about strength, expecially if using the post near it's full height, you can build in a safety margin by finding a wooden dowel rod, or broom handle or similar, and pushing it into the post (shave for a force fit) up to 3 inches beyond the point the post emerges from the frame. This buttresses the post at the most critical place, and also acts as a safety net if the post fails.

I'm not saying the dowel is necessary, that depends on your habits and the amount of post extension, but it's something I'd consider if I were in your shoes.

I don't have it extended out very far, and I am still loosing weight as well.

Then you're in good shape because, as I said posts get stronger as they get shorter (exposed length). If the post can safely handle 250#s at full height, 300#s at half height is nothing.

I have a 1" Seatpost from Redline made of chromoly steel . then you get a machined shim sleeve

ID 25.4, OD the 27.2mm ..

I happened to have a thick wall steel frame Schwinn Mesa Runner bodged together ,
and had a foot of exposed seatpost.

no problems.. saddle clip a conventional 2 nut one , fits on top.

NB metal fatigue characteristics are different for aluminum and steel ..
