I use the smaller derailer cable crimps on both brake and derailer cable ends. I don't crimp them. I use hot glue. Removal and re-installation can be done by warming with a lighter or my little butane torch. It looks much better than crimping them, especially if you use pliers instead of a proper crimping tool. OCD? Maybe so.

I use shrink wrap and will continue to, It's cheap, colourful and easy to apply. So far mine has stayed in place and can be remove and slid back on easily for lubing cables etc.
