105 10-sp jockey wheels squeaking
I've noticed a little squeaking coming from the jockey wheels on my Shimano 105 10-sp RD. Seemed like it started doing it after washing and degreasing my bike's drivetrain. I tried spraying a bit of silicone lubricant in there around the centers of the jockey wheels, but that didn't seem to help. Any recommendations?

You've washed out the oil it depends on to turn smoothly. Remove the entire jockey wheel (note wheel side and off side, in case it's asymmetrical, though I don't think it is). Take the outer covers, and if possible slide out the bushing. Clean everything with a rag, coat with oil, reassemble, and reinstall into the RD and you'll be good to go for a long time, unless you wash the oil out again.

So do people do this every time they wash/clean their bike?
What type of oil do you recommend? I have some household 3-in-1 in the garage.

Don't wash the machinery that aggressively, it needs to stay oiled. I haven't washed a bike in 30-40 years, though all my bikes see their share of rain which sort of does the same thing. The 3in1 is OK, though a heavier oil might be better. The actual needs are very low, it's just that you want something that doesn't wash out so easily.

Well I took both wheels apart including the bushings, wiped them all clean, and pretty much doused the center of each wheel in oil. Put it back together, and it still squeaks. I don't understand how it could still be squeaking with all that oil in there.

haha I just now saw this because we're out of town on vacation and just now got to a coffee shop with wifi. It actually turned out to be the chain, and I feel like a dolt now I've ridden the bike over 40 miles here in Destin FL with all that squeaking. I meant to bring my chain lube bottle with me on the trip but forgot. So we picked up a bottle here in town, applied it to the chain, and the squeaking is all but gone.
Turns out I forgot to lube the chain after the last time I commuted in the rain. I've never experienced a chain get all squeaky like that before, which is why I ASSumed it was coming from the jockey wheels. But all seems good now.

I actually did have a guide pulley on a brand-new Dura-Ace derailleur squeak badly. Chain lube at the pivot was absolutely no help- it wouldn't get around the seal. I had to take it apart, clean and grease the bearing, and put it back together. Squeak went away and never returned. It was a manufacturing error, and a rare one- it just wasn't lubed enough at the factory.
