Setting up downtube shifters

I have been building a bike which has downtube shifters and I'm finding it hard to set them up properly. I am familiar with more modern gear systems but am looking for advice. The levers are Shimano 600. Is there any literature available online which talks you through it, as I'm finding it hard to find any?

Maybe this video can be of help , It not Shimano 600 , but most downtube's shifters have the same parts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSdXdWQ4JeI.

Not too much to DT levers. What's your issue? Are they indexed? Are they braze oned or banded? For the most part they are much like old style thumb shifters or stem shifters. Andy.

Well, just to start if your frame doesnt have the bosses to install those levers then obviously will be hard to make it work. No idea what bike are you talking about.

Second detail. shimano 600 came in several incarnations all the way from the arabesque that came standard with a clamp in the box to the 600 that had sis clicking and friction, we dont know what in the world do you have because besides the shimano 600 part, we can't guess.

3rd detail, if you are using sis and the wheel you have in there is not compatible with it (cassette) then obviously you will have a problem, if you want to use friction then is not a problem, again you have not mention anything about the wheels or anything else related to this.

4th detail, you have not said anything about whats the problem you are having, so is even harder to help

5th... good luck

Screw them in, install cables, if derailleur spring overpowers the shifter's friction, tighten the shifter some more.

bada-boom.
