9 speed rear derailleur

I am getting ready to purchase a 9 speed derailleur for my 8 speed bike. I know that it is supposed to work. It just seems like there is the possibility of a clearance issue since the 8 speed is a wider chain. Are there ever any issues with the 8 speed chain being to wide to fit through a 9 speed rear derailleur?

I've used a 9 speed XT derailleur with a 7 speed cassette and chain and it worked perfectly, so I think the 8 speed chain will be fine.
