Road rims for disc brakes (or can I ride rim brakes rims with disc brakes?)
Hello,
Are there rims compatible with thinner tires (19-28mm range or anything that would allow to ride 23 and 28mm tires) that are also compatible with disc brakes?
I know the use of skinny tires is not common with disc tires but is there a physical reason preventing it?
Also, can I use a rim-brake rim (which is way easier to find for skinny tires) with a disc brake? (assuming I have it built with a disc-compatible hub, obviously!!)
I know rim-brake rims have a brake track, but is the lack of brake track the only specificity of a disc compatible rim? or does it have something??

I had wheels built for my commuter using Mavic Open Pro rims and DT Swiss disc hubs. And here I find out a year and 7800 miles later that I was supposed to use disc-compatible rims 
The braking surfaces on the rims are pristine however. I run 25c tires. The setup works great.

I'd steer clear of using rim brakes on rims that don't have a braking surface but the other way? Who cares!

Disc brake wheels don't care which rims are used. It's only an issue with rim brakes.
There are some disc only rims, which don't have a suitable brake track, though I suspect there's only marginal weight savings, and mostly an issue of cosmetics, ie. painted rims.

Every rim is "disc compatible." Use whatever rim suits you best, regardless of whether it's rim brake compatible or disc only.
Disc brake proponents like to claim weight savings with disc only rims, but I have yet to see it.

There is an advantage to using rim brake rims. The wheels can then be used on both disc brake and rim brake bikes. Find some complete road bikes with disc brakes and see what rim they're using and the way they're spoked.

You can use any rim you like for any tyres you like.
Brakes on skinny tyred road bikes are more about
speed control at speed than sheer stopping power.

Discs dont know what kind of rim it is stopping as others have said. However if you have disc brakes you can use a more aero rim. Some rims used with disc brakes can also be designed stronger.
