STI 9 speed brifter problem, not flush related

I have a rear right Ultegra 9 speed brifter that has an issue. There is a little screw underneath the handle that holds an arm to the shifter lever body. The problem is that the threads appeared to have been stripped out causing the screw to fall out.

Any suggestions on how to kludge it so that I can get it working? The shifter works fine if you hold that arm in place and click either the main arm or the small arm.

Is it a fine-pitched screw? How much material is there around it? You could either drill and tap the hole to the next size up, or you could put JB weld into the hole and either tap threads or just JBweld the screw into there. Be careful to leave the arm free if you decide to take option #2 .

Red threadlocker (loctite) may do the trick too. Just let the Loctite dry fully before you use the brifter again.

I really can't tap it to the next size up due to the arm that the screw clamps to.

I am going to just drill the small drill for the current size all the way through the shifter arm, get a long proper threaded screw, install the screw with some normal (not super hold) loctite an d then once its all set, I will then cut off the protruding screw that is sticking out of the arm and polish it smooth. Yeah, you will be able to see the smoothed off stub, but if it makes the brifter usable again, so be it. Better than having a non-functional brifter.

Well it worked perfectly. I drilled out the hole with a 1/8th drill bit, all the way through the handle. I then tapped the hole with the M4 threads. Next I used a M4 16mm long allen bolt and tightened it down. I then cut off the remaining stud. I will polish the stud and smooth it out some more later on but for now I just want to go ride and test it but it appears to be clicking and working perfectly on the bench.
