Play at one shift on Shimano 9-speed Bar-end

All the other clicks feel solid. I can't move the lever without shifting. The index point at the 8th shift is the exception and exhibits quite a bit of play. This was not the case before I crashed, but the crash didn't do much damage to the shifter. Has anyone else had this experience? Known solutions? Yes, the mounting bolt is snug.

You'd be better off asking in Bicycle Mechanic, but... how does the shifter shift? Does it index all of the cogs correctly?

Yeah, this would be more appropriate in the Bicycle Mechanics forum than here in General Cycling, so I'm moving it.

What does "the crash didn't do much damage to the shifter" mean. A likely culprit would be a damaged derailleur and/or bent hanger, but make no mistake the crash damaged something that is causing your problem..

Yes, the shifter indexes properly as in each time I actuate the shifter the derailleur moves into the right gear. At the 8th click there's a bit more play than at the other shifts which leads to a slip-shift, especially when riding uphill under power.

To clarify the shifter suffered some light cosmetic damage, but not enough to cause structural damage. The derailleur body and cage look fine. I'll recheck the derailleur hanger today, but when I last checked it was aligned properly. The main issue I'm experiencing I think is the play at the shifter at the 8th index point.

When you say "the 8th index point", do you mean shifitng into the 8th cog or shifting into the 9th cog (a 9 speed only has 8 index clicks)? What was the nature or your crash and what side did you lay the bike on? Since you discuss damage to the right shifter, I assume it was on the right side. Did you dismantle the shifter at all after the crash?

8th cog out of 9. The bike landed on the non-drive side. More damage was done to the left shifter than the right but it's the right that isn't performing as well as I'd like. I haven't dismantled the shifter. It's a Dura-Ace bar-end mounted to a Paul Thumby. I don't see how dismantling such a simple shifter would help since all that's involved are bolts and washers.

You need to turn in (clockwise) the low adjustment screw on the derailleur.

The Dura Ace bar end shifter can fit together several ways, but only one is the right way..when assembled the wrong way it often results in indexing with the first half of the shifts, a friction gap in the middle with no indexing and then a return of the indexing with the last shifts.
