Rusty Brake bolt

Can this bolt on the rear of the brake be removed? As you can see it's rusty and I want to clean it off and prime it to avoid future rust. Either it doesnt come out or it's rusted on there pretty tight.

Yes, all the hardware can be removed. You just have to respect the sequence.

Since the mounting bolt looks pretty good I assume you mean the Torx head bolt, top of photo. Personally I wouldn't remove it, just clean it up and coat it with a potectant, or clean it better, mask the brake with a piece of cardboard with a hole cut out and paint it with Rustoleum.

But if you do remove it, check that it isn't held in place with a set screw from the underside of the arm. Otherwise it might use Loctite to retain the adjustment. A I said, respect the sequence and method of assembly and adjustment for the brake and you'll be OK. If in doubt, look for an exploded view drawing for the specific model online.

Shimano tech docs has exploded views of all their brake hardware. Looking at those should provide a clue for how to disassemble any of the single/dual pivot road levers.

If you are talking about the mounting bolt, it's invisible when the brake is mounted, and all you have to do is grease the threads to pretty much eliminate further problems. I agree with FB if your concern is for the Torx pivot bolt.

It's the Torx bolt.
