SRAM / Sachs IGH clickbox question

I picked up an old sachs S7 hub on ebay recently, including everything except the shifter. I'm currently well acquainted with SA hubs but SRAM/sachs and the clickbox system is new to me: as I understand it the indexing is done inside the box rather than the shifter: does this mean that a shifter besides the designated one will work, i.e. any shifter where the indexing mechanism has been removed?

Thinking about it, that wouldn't make any sense... I best read over the docs on how the clickbox works.

No, the indexing is in the shifter. The clickbox has two fingers inside to actuate the shift rod and the sleeve independently of each other.
The rod selects between the sun gears, the sleeve actuates the clutch.
There are two types of shifter/clickbox combos, both do the same job, and they are interchangeable.
The twist style shifter comes with a clickbox which can be opened up to replace the cable, (Note, this is a non standard cable, much thicker than a standard shift cable) and is adjustable.
The thumb style shifter/clickbox is a complete closed unit. It can't be opened or adjusted.
