Formula freehub body interchangeability
Just bought a set of wheels. Formula hubs, but don't know the exact model number. It comes with a 10-speed freehub that doesn't fit my 9-speed cassette.
http://i828.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps339065f8.jpg Just wondering if I can swap this onto it? Formula FCM 8/9/10 Speed Freehub Cassette Body NEW Or if I'm better off selling it and getting another wheelset. Thanks for any input. |
It sounds like you can swap the freehub but I'm not sure if the one you've linked to is what you need. See this thread here for some possibly helpful info: http://forums.roadbikereview.com/whe...al-181238.html
Note that the freehub pictured has a hex-shaped protrusion at the rear versus the threaded bit on the ebay freehub. Perhaps that hex protrusion is just a nut that you already have inside of your rear hub though. You may have luck contacting Formula directly too: http://www.formulahubs.com/en/main/ |
Thank you, joejack. I will pull off the freehub tonight to see what I'm dealing with.
I sent Formula an email a few days ago, but haven't heard anything back. |
I bought a unknown wheelset from someone a while back that looks exactly like yours. Same freehub body and hub assembly. Rims look the same as well. Only paid 30 dollars for the wheel set and it was in great shape. I don't run the 10 speed stuff so I jsut swapped over a spare 105 freehub hub assembly in place of the Formula freehub assembly.
Took a while since in a sense I was completely rebuilding the wheel but the finished wheel is very sturdy and decent. The dimensions of the 105 freehub and the Formula freehub were nearly identical so I was able to reuse all the spokes with no issue. |

Well, took apart the hub. It wasn't a pop-off end cap, like mentioned in the link to the thread above. But easy enough to just unscrew the cap off with a hub wrench. The freehub is not a screw-on type, nor a hexagonal shape, but has three ratchets on there. Below is the picture. I've been looking at Salsa freehubs, which look exactly like it, but are also $90. Hoping there is a cheaper alternative.
