Smaller Chainring for SRAM Rival

I would like to lower the gearing on my bike with SRAM Rival to get to a more touring gearing.

Currently, the front is 50/34 and the back is 36/11. This summer I went from northern Vermont to Brooklyn through the Adirondacks and though I made it fine, I was pounding hard and slow on many of the steeper hills. Next year I plan on the Pacific Coast train so would like some lower (easier) gearing.

I'm OK with front chainrings of something like 44/28 or 42/26. What is the most effective way to do that? Do I have to get a whole new crankset? Can I avoid a new bottom bracket? Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

As a side note, it is surprising to me that the standard gearing on road bikes, even compact is 50/34 and xx/11. 50/11 drives close to 30mph at 80 rpm. I'd think most people would gladly lose a little of that in the top end for more at the bottom end. At least most of the old guys in Vermont.

Thanks for the help.

Bikes: '''96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '12 Surly Pacer, All are 3x8,9 or 10. It is hilly around here!

Your compact crank has a 110 mm BCD (bolt circle diameter) so a 33T chainring is the smallest that will fit and the difference between the rather uncommon 33 and your current 34 is not worth the change.

If you want a smaller chainring than 34, you will need a road triple crank with a 74 mm BCD for the granny ring (fits down to 24T) or a MTB crank. However, SRAM does not make any road triples so your Rival brifters won't work with any triple crank. You might be able to fit a MTB double and make it work with your brifters but a completely new crank will be needed and a new bottom bracket will be almost a certainty.
