bearing retainers

I was reading an article that advised people to remove the retainers for a headset's bearings. Is this a good thing to do? I have no idea, it doesnt really pertain to me since i used cartridge bearings but im just wondering.

It isn't a bad thing. But then you have to worry about chasing loose bearings or having a bunch of extras on hand.
