Deciphering Shimano compatability to get the right chain
Hey guys,
I have a Diamondback Podium 2 with Tiagra up front and a 105 in the back. I have a triple chain ring up front, and a 9-speed cassette in the back. I'm not sure what brand or style either of the rings or cassettes are. I need a new chain as my bike sat for some time and has rusted a bit. I was thinking a dura-ace quality chain, but I'm open to suggestions. In any case, I was having a helluva time figuring out which chain model # to buy. Any help would be appreciated, I found the shimano chart but it just confused me more :notamused: Thanks, The noob |
IMO you get the most 9s chain for the buck from KMC. They have a few choices, and you shouldn't feel compelled to buy the top of the line. If you don't care about cosmetic flourishes, or maybe links that have holes punched in them to save weight, buy the best "no frills" chain they offer. That should be the 2nd or 3rd one down from the top.

You need a nine speed chain. Shimano, SRAM, KMC, etc. If you haven't replaced a chain before, you need a chain tool to cut the chain to the same length as your existing chain and push in a pin. If you buy a chain with a master link (quick link, etc.) you won't have to push in a pin.
Do a search on youtube about chain replacement for instructions. |

I don't know the KMC line that well (I used to be a Wippermann, and Sram wholesaler) but the price is definitely right, and that on one close to that is what I'd buy.

Based on the reviews and pics at this site, you picked the right one.
Looks like you found a killer price, too! |
