Replace Brompton Chain
Hi Guys
Do I need any special tools to replace the chain on my 2011 Brompton? I have never replaced a bike chain before :( Are there any video tutorials? I could not find any on YouTube. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. |
AFAIK Bromptons are like any other bike in this regard. Unless the chain is closed with a master link, you will need a chain tool to open and remove the old chain and to cut the new chain to the correct length. You will then need to close the new chain. I would recommend that you obtain a master link or a chain which comes one, for ease in future service such as cleaning and lubrication. If not you will need to close the chain by the method recommended by the manufacturer.
Here's a link to Brompton spare chains; apparently they supply them to length and also with a master link. http://brompton.com/spares/t5/chain |
as most-all 3 speed hub cogs are 1/8", you need a 1/8" type chain..
If there is 2 cogs on the hub, the 6speed , then the cogs are thinner and you use a 3/32" chain. Aka 5,6,7,8 speed derailleur chain.. the link count is dependent on the chainring size. |
The one and three speed Brompton bikes take a 1/8 inch (one-speed) chain, while the 2 and 6 speeds take a derailleur chain. If the previous chain worked fine and is factory original just get the same number of links.

Both 1/8" and 3/32" chains in several different lengths are shown in the above link. You will need to match what you have got on the bike. It might be wise to check with Brompton to be sure.
