ulterga 11 speed cassette with the 10 speed 105 shifters

Hello,

I bought the Ulterga 6800 11 speed (11-32T) cassette and Ulterga GS rear derailleur and I'm wondering if they will work with my existing Shimano 105 shifters or do I have to get new shifter too? Thanks

New shifter time. Match shifters to cassettes.

Ulterga? Must by a knock-off of Shimano Ultegra. I assume they are cross-compatible.

Anyway, the 11 speed cassette is too wide to fit on the older 8/9/10 speed hubs. Isn't bike industry planned obsolescence great? So check your hubs to make sure the cassette will fit.

My recommendation: keep the "Ulterga" rear derailleur, and return the 11-speed cassette. Then buy a Shimano XT (or whatever) 11-32 10-speed cassette. Finding a 12-32 cassette is even better, as it will allow you to dispense with the useless 11-tooth small cog.

Only on BF would it seem to make sense to buy new shifters to correct the mistake of buying the wrong cassette.

Ahhg, thanks.. You're right the 11-speed cassettes aren't going to work with my 2 year old Ultegra wheel.

This guys.. https://velonews.competitor.com/2013/...1-speed_301392 talks about it at the bottom of the page. I think I'll just send back both the cassette and the rear derailleur and stick with the
105 10-speed system, spending another 500+ on new wheel set doesn't sound appealing at the moment.

+1 11s is pointless if it includes an 11t.

I'd say it's pointless for anyone who doesn't live somewhere really hilly and dislikes triples. Ten well-chosen cogs and two carefully-selected rings should be both close and wide enough for 95% of folks.

Oh hey - can someone clarify something for me?

Please tell me 11s RDs aren't backwards-compatible. If they use the same ratio as a 6s RD I might have to quit my job rather than deal with such stupidity when it becomes widespread...
