strange sound from small chainring

strange sound from small chainring
I have a relatively new shmano Ultegra group set. The sound that the bike (madone 4.7) makes when in the smaller chainring/crankset isn’t smooth at all, no clicks etc… just a rough sound (although the bike runs smooth). At the same time, the sound the bike makes on the larger chainring is very smooth. I’ve degreased, cleaned lubricated the chain, had the cables tuned and still the sound on the small chainring isn’t smooth. I’m not sure if it just me expecting a smooth chain sound, just like the larger chainring, or something is wrong. Any thoughts?
