Drive train Question - 6 speed and 7 speed

I am piecing together a bike for a buddy. Its one of those builds where money is an issue and most of the parts will be used.

Does 6 and 7 speed freewheels have the same indexing? I thought they did, but maybe its 5 and 6 that are the same. Right now there is a 7 speed shifter /brake lever with a 6 speed freewheel. There is no way to fit a 7speed freewheel as the axle would be too short to get the wheel nuts on enough.

Perhaps you could add a few washers to the axle to move the locknuts out a bit and make room for a 7 speed freewheel ? Depends on how much free axle you have to work with. And the freewheel would need to spaced to match the shifters. You would likely have to re-dish the wheel a little bit to recenter the rim in the frame.

Indexing is specific to models & brands and year of manufactur, so it is hard to know what will or will not work without specific information.

Most 6 speed are 5.5mm, while 7 speed are 5.0mm.

No, a 7-speed shifter will not properly index with a 6-speed freewheel. A used bike I bought years ago had just that setup and the original owner couldn't understand why it shifted so poorly.
