Today I learned that not all disc mounts are the same...

Ok, so I am new to disc brakes. I have never had a bike with them and now I'm doing a build and I'm confused.

I just picked up an All-City Macho Man disc. I have a group I'm going to put on it, so I got a bare frame and plan on building it up. I ordered a set of the same brakeset that comes on the complete version of the bike... mechanical Hayes CX-5's. They came in today and it's clear they're not going to go on the frame. I look at the spec sheet and do a little Google-fu and it's clear there are adapters to make this work. I just can't figure out which ones. Both my brakes are the same and both have 160mm rotors. I think I need different adapters for front and rear, but I'm not sure if the rotors matter. Can I make this work and if so... how?

The spec sheet says the frame and fork have 51mm IS mounts. The Hayes CX-5's don't indicate front or rear.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Your issue is common, adapters are often needed in order to mount a certain disc brake on a frame with a different type of mount, also specific adapters are needed for different size rotors, etc. In your case, it's fairly simple: your frame and fork have 51mm I.S. mounts, the brakes are designed for 74mm post mounts. The 160mm rotor size is the Hayes "standard" size, so you simply need front and rear adpapters that allow mounting of the 74mm post mount brake calipers to your 51mm I.S. frame/fork mounts. Hayes part # 98-15073 for the rear brake, Hayes part # 98-15068 for the front. Good luck-
