replace chainring?

Around here i'm in the 50t ring most of the time and I think it is getting worn out but i'll ask here for an opinion :) I can take more pics later if needed.. my car was blocked in so i couldn't take it out.

sorry about the grungy chain.. just rode today and it's due for a scrub.

How often have you replaced the chain? if you get a new one , and a new cassette ,

then the new chain will give you indication of how worn your chainring is..

Jakedatc 11-10-13 03:24 PM

That is a bit backwards.. The cassette is not worn out so i'm not replacing that. Chain is probably coming up on 2500-3000mi since i'm not sure when i swapped it out this spring.

Looks like it has plenty of life left in it. As long as you don't let your chains elongate past 1/8" or so, the chainring teeth should work until they're nearly gone. :thumb:

That chainring looks pretty nackerd gone. It should properly be replaced along with the chain and most likley the cassette/freewheel. Note running a worn chain and cassette/freewheel will wear aout chainrings quick cut there life by 2/3rds. I have chainrings original on 30 year old bikes riden heavily that don't look that bad.

still not understanding why I should replace a cassette which is not worn out. They were not put on at the same time. chainring is twice as old. I have replaced the chain every 2500mi or so.. usually each spring.

There's nothing obvious wrong with your chainring. What symptoms or complaints do you have?

Jakedatc 11-10-13 07:21 PM

No symptoms.. it was just not looking as un-spikey as compared to a new one. Perhaps it's not as bad as I think. The section i photo'd might be the ramped part for shifting.

I measured my chain and it is 12" center to center so it is not worn out either. cassette cogs are still nicely squared off on top

tomorrow it will get a good scrubbing since i feel bad my chain looks so grunged up.

Well if eveything works right that makes my earlier post pretty much moot. There was an assumbtion that this drivetrain had failed or wasn't functioning properly. I if everything works good and the chain is within basic torerance ride it I have riden stuff that looked worse.
