Does an item like this (handlebar extension?) exist?
 

Hi guys:

Would like to attach an extension bar parallel to the handlebar. Most of the items on the market seem to be limited.

Does the item shown in the picture exist?

This is a regular stem with
a. the part that connects to the steerer tube removed
b. the part that connects to the handlebar is duplicated and then pasted together.

i have never seen anything quite like that

if your purpose is to have a second handlebar to use in a different position from the first handlebar
have you considered a trekking bar
like the one shown in the top right of the first array of pictures in
this link

if your purpose is to clear up clutter from all the bells odometers lights etc
cluttering your dashboard
then something like this might be the answer
but you cant actually use something like that as a handlebar
could be the answer

but you couldnt use something like that for a real handlebar

I'm not sure what you want to accomplish but if it's to get a mounting place for accessories, there are commercially available extension brackets that provide this. If you want another real handlebar, Sheldon Brown has built a bike with two stems mounted on the same (long) steerer tube, one above the other.

I do not want a second handlebar.

The type of handlebar extension that you suggested and available in various models have constraints like not securely connected to the handlebar, weight (of accessories) that can be attached and length of extension bar that can attached.

OK, if the existing brackets aren't suitable, I guess you could buy two stem, cut both in half and have a competent welder join the appropriate halves together.

Perhaps something like this is more in line with what you want. You could modify the accessory bar to make it wider if you want with aluminum tubing or aluminum bar stock.

Although they aren't made anymore, there was a accessory bar known as a Sidetrak. You can see it in this post. I still use one. It won't rotate on the bar because of the way it is made. Here's a bit better picture of one

Thanks cyccocommute--the bikeforum thread you linked had a suggestion to check out Peter White's page on mounting lights http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/light-mounts.asp. Found a useful item: Nitto lamp holder but way expensive at $90.

Any other suggestions?
