question re top mount shifters "thumbies"

I have a set of Deore XT top mount shifters taken from a late 80's mtn bike that i am trying to sell. i believe they are 6spd and they have 6 hash marks on the right shifter. However, someone asked if they could be used for 7 or 8spds. any idea if they could be? I assume in friction mode that would be possible. and I also remember reading about an extra "ghost" click. here is a link to a pic:

They are 6 speed. There is also an additional position that may or may not be a usable cog position. 6 and 7 speed cog spacing was also different. There is a friction mode that allows use with any speed. Don't try and represent them as anything else. If I wanted a 7 or 8 speed index shifter, that is what i'd buy.
