Slotted Axle - Lost a Washer
I lost a washer (one of those thin ones that has a little nipple on it) that goes on the rear slotted axle of my 1977 Varsity. Are those really needed? If so, would a hardware store carry them? Thanks...

washer is a washer slotted is not needed on the axles unless you are trying to go 400% factory

Thanks muzpuf, that's a relief! I can see what they were trying to accomplish with those - to stop the axle itself from turning, but the nuts should be able to do that job by themselves. Good to get a concurrence.

The keyed washer is a defense against the hardware backing off. It isn't critical, but without the key, you have to be a bit more careful to lock the locknut and cone together securely.
The washer is readily available at a bike shop if you have a decent relationship with the mechanic. Bike shops discard decnet qualtities of low end rear wheels, each of which has a pair of these washers.

I assume these are the ones that have the little "J" hook off to one side?

Wrong thread. That was the other guy with a Schwinn. If you reread the OP you'll see he's clearly describing a keyed axle washer between cone and locknut.

Not clear enough for me, obviously :/
Don't know what other thread you're talking about, though.
