crankset change
I would like to upgrade the sugino 600 crankset on my salsa vaya Ti, it's a serviceable crank, but I would like something with a little more bling, and not have to change out derailleurs. Any suggestions?

You didn't mention any cost constraints so a Campy Super Record Carbon should provide adequate bling and should shift with your current front derailleur.

+1 to Hillrider's reply. But more to the OP's focus- Any crankset with the same ring tooth counts and number of rings should be handled by the ft der well enough. EXCEPTING the different manufacturer's shift gate and lift pin designs. I say this second part because some brands' rings shift better then others. When the replacement cankset (and likely BB too) are installed there will be some need to fine tune the ft der adjustments but if the large ring teeth number remains the same not too much adjustment. Just don't expect to go any faster after a couple of weeks (and the newness wears off in your mind). Andy.

Gary , narrow down the planet wide criteria?.. what chainring sizes do you want ?
1, double or triple.. what kind of riding is your most common ..? You OK with a BB type change to External? |
It currently has a sugino 600 triple with 46, 36, 26, tooth counts. and changing BB doesn't bother me. thanks

Just about the entire aftermarket is open to you. Go nuts. |

Lightning with 130/74mm spider. The price is a bit daunting at $680 without rings. Perhaps run 48-38-26.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=357859 For less money StrongLight makes some alloy 110/74mm two-piece triple cranks and FSA's 130/74mm carbon offerings won't get scraped up like contemporary black alloy cranks that look cheesy. 50-39-30 rings are (or were) a factory option an obviously you can run down to a 24 tooth small ring. I was running a SLK (solid carbon) crank I swapped for a SLK Light in my parts bin. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=357860 For a more classic look try a Campagnolo Record (135/74mm) triple crank; you can still find them NOS with 50-40-30 rings. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=357862 You don't mention what sort of front derailleur you're running (road or mountain bike) - that makes a big difference in the sort of big + medium rings you can accommodate. |
