Cantilever cable triangle install problem
 

I have Tektro RBP cable triangle for my cantilever brakes. Below is what this looks like (image found on google)

I'm installing it onto a new frame so i have to redo the brake cable... The brake cable goes thru the large center bolt. However after it passes the bolt and before touching the bottom edge of the triangle, there is very little room to bend the brake cable such that it clears the bottom of the triangle. Perhaps 3-4mm segment of cable pokes out underneath the bolt.

The "bending" is made more difficult because it also needs to clear a straddle cable and a plastic cable sleeve. I have to bend it quite a bit, and the cable is fairly stiff when dealing with a short segment

Do I simply bend it via brut force or is there a simple way to do this? thanks

back when I did use em tho I'd grab the cable with needle nose pliers to pull em thru

they won't fracture like the cnc-ed triangle ones do when they get old, plus the open hook design is useful for quick releasing

i hope your own brakes have the straddle wire set shallower than the photo, cause those look adjusted pretty weak

hey thanks for the link. the old hook design cable triangle.. so basically the straddle cable slides freely on it? It doesn't get locked down like the Tektro ones I have? Does it ever pop out then?

Are there any benefits to tightening down the straddle cable? I can already do a quick release of brakes via one of the cantilever arms...

I use the Problem Solvers Wide Cable Carriers http://problemsolversbike.com/produc..._cable_carrier on my canti-equipped bikes. They make adjusting and centering the brakes very easy and straightforward. You can push the straddle cable back and forth to center the brakes and it doesn't move. I second xenologer's suggestion to run the straddle cable much lower.

The solution a shop would do is to replace the brake cable with a longer one. While I haven't seen any of these CNCed cable carriers break/crack i suppose they could. I run cantis on a few bikes and use the traditional carrier styles, like the DC one linked to. I will say that the straddle cable holding set screws are nice. There are times when It is needed to run the carrier off center (to pull one canti more then the other).

But back to the OP's problem. Just replace the cable and leave more tail past the carrier next time. Andy.

I found a shimano made wide cable carrier like the D-C one just wider,

No the cable wont pop out, the brake return springs pull it the cable Tight.

I needed the wide PS carrier on one of my bikes that had tight clearance for the straddle wire .
one problem I had with it tho is the way it clamps the cable by screwing a bolt directly against it -no clamping plate/washer.
the bolt would cut strands of the cable as it was tightened , trying to go looser to avoid cutting let the cable slip under hard braking .
I solved the issue by fashioning a tiny steel spacer that I dropped into the bolt hole ; it protected the cable from the sharp threads of the bolt and I was able to fully tighten without cable fraying.
