3T Arx Pro - Tight Fit

Bought a 110mm 3T stem the other day and installed it on my track bike, however I found it interesting that installing it on the steerer tube was a lot harder than my old stem; the 3T required a bit of a push to move down the steerer tube.

Is this normal for some stems?

there may be some fit tolerance slop on cheaper parts.

You bought something better made.

Some stems don't relax open much when the clamp bolts are removed, and so be a tighter fit to install.

A trick going back to the days of single bolt road stems is to pot a penny into the slot, and threading the bolt from the wrong side, so it bears against the coin and can jack the stem open. Don't get carried away because you can damage the stem, but jacking it open a hair will make sliding it on much easier, and won't hurt the stem at all.

The expansion plug that the top cap screws into can sometimes cause the steerer tube to expand very slightly, making some stems difficult to install. If this is a problem, you could remove the expansion plug, install the stem, then reinstall the expansion plug.
