Will this work? Do I need anything special? Having the local shop do the instillation, but want to make sure this will work(they are closed for renovation right now so can't ask them).

Not sure why unless you want rings with fewer teeth?
IF so, you'd really want to change the FDER to one optimized for the smaller rings, although the existing one would probably still "function", once the height was reset.
Your existing BB "might" be too long, but "might" still "function". (122.5 vs 118mm)

Are you going for lower gears, or a different look?

I suspect your front derailer will shift fine over the rings, but as Bill Kapaun said, you should probably lower the front derailer slightly (and then adjust the shifting aferwards).

And you may want a different bottom bracket in order to get proper chainline with the new crank.

It will work (with some adjustments and BB swap) but your stock bike has a low bottom end (28/32) so what are you trying to accomplish?

I find that I still am looking for more bottom end around here, and with a tour in the works this year thought it would be a nice option.

Just thumbed through your blog. Let me just say that the example that you are setting for your kids is unrivaled, of a scale that we should all aspire to. :thumb:

Also, bike tours are an absolute blast. Some of my best cycling memories are from multi-day tours with friends. Have a blast, and be safe out there.

Should be a straight off swap, finished off with a gearing adjustment.

Although, as others have mentioned, a 28/32 is a fairly low gear to start with. But if you've confirmed that you really need lower, go for it.

Admittedly, a supposedly mtb crank will open up lower gears than a 34T cassette would.

Losing top end shouldn't be much of a concern. I run a 42 big on my commuter and am entirely happy to coast those precious moments when I'm spinning out.

I've gotten really fond of "road" (=tightly spaced) cassettes, and something like a quad, or a ridiculously tiny granny gear, would make it possible to get both a decent overall range, and tight spacing.
