I definitely understand your point, Thermionic. I'm pretty sure I could get all the bike I need for $500. Anything beyond that is just a want or desire, with only marginal improvement that I could ever take advantage of.

At least I'm not kidding myself, thinking I need this stuff!

Postman has brought the new gear. I'll be dropping 310 grams (11 oz)(2-3 swigs from a water bottle...) when it's installed.

It's not.

I have cranks (SLK and SLK Light) taking two different width MegaExo bottom brackets.

Those made for solid arm carbon cranks (SLK not "light") have a wider non-drive side bearing which mates to their longer axle and thinner arm. The BB-8000 is the affordable steel bearing variant.



Those made for the "Light" hollow arm carbon cranks (SLK Light, K-Force Light) have a thinner non-drive bearing cup to accommodate the crankset with a shorter axle and thicker arm. The BB-8681 is the affordable steel bearing version


and there's a newer BB-8681/DI2 with the same cups but a thinner spacer making room for internal cables



FSA sells at least two other types of MegaExo bottom brackets which pair with alloy cranks and I wouldn't be surprised to see similar differences (maybe due to arm size, maybe due to the angle sort of like how low profile Record/Chorus square taper cranks took a narrow 102mm axle while the others took a 111 or 115mm axle).

What was it that Sheldon said about bicycle standards? Stupid FSA -can't play nice with others...

I do know that my FSA Gossamer MegaEXO triple works just fine with regular Shimano-spec cups. I'm running a Dura Ace BB on it right now.

Thanks to everyone who helped in this thread. It will be months before I get to ride this on the road.

Drew, thank you for the bearing info. I can't imagine that (for me) the difference between the steel bearings and ceramic makes it worth using ceramic replacements, when the time comes.

My fish-scale says I'm at 18.1 lbs (if anyone cares).
