What rim strip width?

What rim strip width would you recommend for this rim? Going to be buying Velox, which is sold in 10, 16, and 22mm widths.

Just wanted to get a second opinion first before I purchase it. Josh |
16mm is as wide as you can go because it already comes up onto the tire seat (raised side area) slightly. Any wider and it will interfere with the tire seating. Use 16mm, and stretch it down tight when applying.
One thing that interferes with tape sticking are oils and waxes left over from the manufacturing process. Use Ammonia (Windex) on a rag to thoroughly wipe down the inside of the rim and let dry before installing the tape. You can also use mineral spirits, alcohol, or acetone if you prefer, but not nail polish remover which leaves an oil residue. |
as wide as that cross brace in the extrusion die, shown..
not so wide as to go up the part where the tire bead lays, or tire fitting becomes more difficult. Ouija board guesses 10. velox sticky back cotton tape .. double wall rim , tape has to span the drilled holes in the inner web, and resist the Tube PSI as it's inflated.. . |
16 mm fits almost everything. 22 mm only works with wide mountain bike rims. 10 mm is all but useless - it only fits single wall rims with a narrow dropped center channel.

I was OK until the first flat when I just slightly moved the tape with the tire lever. |
Thanks, I'll order the 16mm then. I imagine that the 10mm rim strip is useful for high end track wheels or deep section rims.

How wide is the base of the well between the bead seats . ?
the rim strip just has to cover the drilled holes .. I estimated the width 2/3 of the width given as the gap between the bead retaining hooks . extra credit : chamfer off around the edges of the holes, so the corner is not sharp. |
